An IHG mattress run aimed at a Confirmable Suite Upgrade should start with the stay where you hope to use the award. If the reservation, property or timing will not work, earning the award does not solve your room requirement.
IHG's 20-night milestone includes a choice of one Confirmable Suite Upgrade. The award is not an automatic suite booking: eligible rates, participating properties and availability matter. IHG Milestone Reward rules.
Work backwards from the intended stay
Write down the hotel, dates, length, rate and room you need. Then ask IHG whether that reservation could use the award and when an application can be made.
The published terms allow application through Customer Care from 14 days to 24 hours before arrival, for stays of up to five nights. The award lasts 12 months from selection; milestone selection itself has a 90-day deadline. Restrictions and exclusions still apply. IHG award conditions.
That timing creates an important distinction. If you require a particular suite for a family trip many months ahead, an award you cannot yet apply is not a substitute for booking accommodation that already meets your needs.
Price the remaining nights against usable value
Suppose you have 18 milestone-eligible nights and no ordinary travel left before the relevant qualification deadline. A genuine two-night completion plan would cost $160 including transport and unavoidable charges.
For a later three-night stay, assume you would willingly pay $70 per night for the practical extra space of a suitable suite. Your personal maximum value is $210, not whatever premium appears on the hotel's most expensive suite.
If the award works, the apparent margin is $50: $210 of personal value less $160 of qualification cost. That is before allowing for uncertainty or the value of the alternative milestone reward you would forgo.
These are illustrative inputs, not observed room prices or IHG valuations. A narrow $50 margin is not compelling when the redemption has no confirmed availability.
Test a less favourable outcome
Now suppose the only useful stay before the award expires is one night. At the same $70 personal nightly value, the award cannot justify the $160 completion cost on its own.
Or suppose your reservation requires a room type that the available upgrade would not provide. More floor space may be pleasant, but it does not necessarily solve a need for two separate sleeping areas. Check the actual room configuration rather than budgeting against the word "suite".
Use three cases in your plan:
| Outcome | Budget treatment |
|---|---|
| Award can be applied to a suitable planned stay | Use a conservative value for that specific upgrade |
| Another usable stay exists but is less valuable | Recalculate using that fallback |
| No suitable redemption before expiry | Assign no usable award value |
You do not need to invent a probability for each case. If the decision fails as soon as the preferred redemption is unavailable, recognise that dependence before spending.
Avoid counting the same reward twice
Your mattress-run budget should include only rewards actually earned and selected. Do not value every option in a milestone menu as though you receive them all.
The suite objective is also separate from annual lounge access. The IHG 40-night lounge guide covers that different decision. A desired room upgrade should not quietly become a justification for buying a much larger night quantity.
First subtract ordinary travel that will count towards the milestone. If the two nights will happen anyway, their accommodation cost is not an additional mattress-run expense. If they exist solely to earn the award, include the entire incremental cost.
Considering LuxuryAscent's night-credit listing
The IHG mattress-run service is LuxuryAscent's own commercial offer. An advertised night quantity does not prove milestone eligibility or usable suite inventory.
Before ordering, obtain written details of the activity, personal participation, specific milestone treatment, posting, reversals and refunds. This article has not verified programme approval or service fulfilment. The service price should enter your comparison only after its intended qualification outcome is established.
The decision: earn towards a suite award only when you have a credible use and can tolerate the availability limits. When a specific room is essential, price a confirmed room booking alongside the uncertain reward route.
