Forty qualifying nights can be an important IHG target, but two separate outcomes sit at that number. Platinum Elite is a status tier. Annual Lounge Membership is a Milestone Reward choice. Reaching Platinum should not be described as automatically receiving annual lounge access.

Name the benefit you actually want
If the objective is a lounge membership, put that in your plan explicitly. Do not rely on “get Platinum” as shorthand. Check the current selection process and the conditions attached to the reward in your IHG account and the IHG programme FAQ.
That distinction also helps when comparing different ways of holding status. A tier label on its own does not establish your qualifying-night balance or prove that a milestone reward has been earned and selected.
Before assigning value to lounge access, look at the hotels you expect to visit. Verify that the proposed reward works at the relevant properties and on the relevant stays. Do not count lounge value for every future IHG night without checking those details.
Calculate the remaining distance to 40
Imagine an account with 33 qualifying nights and three more expected from a planned trip. The projected balance is 36, leaving a four-night gap:
40 − 33 − 3 = 4 qualifying nights
That is a much smaller decision than buying an arbitrary 10-night bundle. If the three-night trip is uncertain, keep a second calculation without it so you understand the fallback.
Use the milestone-eligible night count, not reward points or a general count of bookings. IHG rollover nights can count towards status but not Milestone Rewards; the example assumes all 36 projected nights are milestone-eligible. IHG rollover rules.
Put a personal ceiling on the extra spend

If you considered spending $450 and expected to use a resulting benefit on six future hotel nights, you would need $75 of incremental value per use to cover that outlay. At 15 uses, the figure is $30. Those numbers are original budget calculations, not quoted lounge prices or a guarantee of access.
Avoid valuing a lounge meal at its hypothetical retail price if you would normally choose a cheaper alternative. Your willingness to pay is the relevant input.
Check eligibility before treating the plan as achievable
