Usually not on an ordinary Expedia or Booking.com reservation. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards all tie points, elite-night credit and most status benefits to an eligible rate or qualifying stay. Their current rules generally exclude bookings made through ordinary online travel agencies (OTAs).

There is an important qualification: not every booking made outside a hotel website is automatically ineligible. Some authorised travel advisers, corporate booking systems, global distribution system (GDS) rates and labelled card-portal programmes can transmit a qualifying rate. The name of the website or app is therefore not enough; the underlying booking channel and rate determine what you receive.

The practical rule

If hotel points, status credit or on-property benefits influence your choice, obtain written confirmation that the exact rate is eligible before paying. Adding a loyalty number later does not turn an ineligible OTA rate into a qualifying stay.

Points, elite nights and hotel benefits are three separate checks

Travellers often ask whether a booking “earns status” as though there were one switch. In practice, check three outcomes:

  1. Hotel points: the programme currency earned on an eligible room rate and, in some programmes, qualifying charges.
  2. Elite-night or stay credit: activity that counts towards earning or retaining status.
  3. On-property benefits: breakfast or food-and-beverage credit, lounge access, upgrades, late checkout and other tier benefits.

An agency may display your membership number without confirming all three. A front desk may also recognise your status as a courtesy without the stay becoming eligible for points or night credit. Treat anything outside the written programme and rate terms as discretionary.

What happens with Expedia and Booking.com at the four major programmes?

ProgrammeOrdinary OTA bookingImportant qualification
Marriott BonvoyOnline travel and other third-party channels are non-qualifying for points or miles and membership-tier benefits; Elite Night Credit requires a qualifying stay.A qualifying rate booked through an approved travel agent or meeting planner can be eligible when the required member details are included.
Hilton HonorsHilton says third-party website bookings do not earn Honors points, stay or night credit, or additional Honors benefits.Adding the Honors number can enable selected app features, but Hilton says it does not restore the missing loyalty earnings or benefits.
World of HyattHyatt excludes rooms booked through third-party online retailers from eligible rates. Qualifying nights require an eligible rate or an eligible award night.Hyatt says eligible GDS rates booked by travel advisers can earn World of Hyatt points and rewards.
IHG One RewardsOrdinary OTA and third-party channel bookings are listed as non-qualifying; members generally do not earn room-rate points or enjoy member benefits on those rates.IHG recognises authorised travel-agent platforms whose distribution agreements specifically make their rates qualifying. Some eligible incidental charges can be treated separately.
