If you have already earned Marriott's 50-night Annual Choice Benefit and have not selected it, five Elite Night Credits may reduce or eliminate a further mattress run. They are worth considering when they close a real gap, not simply because extra credits sound useful.
The essential distinction is eligibility: the 50-night reward cannot help you reach its own initial threshold. Marriott's rules also allocate the five credits to the year in which the choice was earned, even if selected the following year within the permitted deadline. Marriott Annual Choice Benefit rules.
When can five credits replace paid nights?
Consider a hypothetical member with 68 accepted Elite Night Credits, two more expected from a genuine planned stay, and an unused 50-night choice. Their Titanium target is 75.
| Calculation | Credits |
|---|---|
| Already accepted | 68 |
| Expected from planned travel | 2 |
| Projected total before reward selection | 70 |
| Five-credit Annual Choice selection | 5 |
| Projected total afterwards | 75 |
If all those inputs are correct, additional mattress nights are unnecessary for that target. First check whether the five-credit benefit was already selected and included in the 68. Counting it twice would leave the plan five credits short.
Now change the starting balance to 63. The same travel and selection produce 70, not 75. The choice still helps, but it does not finish the job. This is why you should calculate from account activity rather than a remembered status label.
Are the credits really free?
They have no separate hotel bill, but choosing them means giving up another available benefit. That opportunity cost can matter more than the price of a short stay.
Suppose five genuine additional nights would cost you $425 all-in. If the five-credit choice removes that expense and the alternative reward would be worth only $150 to you, choosing credits improves the comparison by $275. Both amounts are illustrative personal estimates, not Marriott valuations.
Reverse the situation: you already expect to reach 75 through ordinary travel. The five credits no longer avoid that $425 expense because you would never have incurred it. An alternative reward you can use may be more valuable.
Do not justify a selection by adding every possible downstream reward at full theoretical value. List what changes because of this choice, check its availability, and use a conservative personal value.
Should you wait before making the selection?
Waiting can preserve flexibility when the year's travel is unsettled, but only within Marriott's selection deadline. Check the current deadline in your account and keep a reminder of it; missing a deadline is not a strategy.
There are three sensible planning states:
- Ordinary travel will complete the target: compare the other reward choices rather than automatically selecting credits.
- Five credits would close a confirmed gap: compare the selection with the full cost of the nights it avoids.
- Travel is uncertain: retain two scenarios, one with the planned stay and one without it, before committing to non-refundable rooms.
Make the choice early enough for any required posting checks before a trip where you need the resulting status. This is a planning buffer, not a promise about processing speed.
What if a gap remains afterwards?
Use the Marriott Platinum and Titanium night-gap guide to separate accepted credits, forthcoming eligible travel and the genuinely outstanding amount. Compare completing those nights with the extra benefits you would actually use above your present tier.
LuxuryAscent's Marriott mattress-run listing is a commercial offer from this site's independent seller. It is not the Annual Choice Benefit and should not be confused with Marriott-issued credits.
Before considering an order, request written evidence covering activity eligibility, your participation, posting, possible reversals and refunds. Seller-advertised nights have not been verified here as a programme-approved no-travel route. Compare only the residual need after legitimate rewards and travel have been accounted for.
The decision: use an unselected choice when it avoids more cost than the alternative reward is worth to you. Do not pay for a mattress run before checking whether your account already contains a suitable way to close the gap.
